We asked Nabil to describe his character in “Murray’s Affair.” He stated he plays a “young criminal who’s so hungry for money and success that he becomes blind to the danger closing in on him.” This ambition and vulnerability are what make his performance so captivating, drawing viewers into the character’s world.
The Actor’s Process: Language Mastery and Emotional Depth
We had the opportunity to delve into Nabil Thouri’s acting process, exploring the techniques he studies to prepare for and embody his roles.
Nabil emphasizes the importance of language proficiency, especially when working with a language that isn’t his native tongue. “I think every actor has their own approach, and for me, it always starts with mastering the language, especially since English isn’t my first language,” he explains. To achieve this mastery, he goes the extra mile, sometimes translating lines into French, his native language, to fully grasp their emotional nuances. “I put in extra effort to feel completely confident with the script. Sometimes I even translate lines into French, my native language, to understand them on a deeper emotional level. If I have time before a shoot, I like to ‘test drive’ my character a bit in real life, staying in character while interacting with others in a casual setting, just to make it feel second nature.” This unconventional approach allows him to inhabit the role authentically. He also emphasizes the importance of rigorous rehearsal, whether with a scene partner or through self-practice. “I rehearse a lot. If I have someone to practice with, great. If not, I talk to myself in character (as weird as that may sound). Script analysis is crucial. I build a full backstory: where the character comes from, what they want, and where they’re going. I don’t try to ‘be someone else’ when I act. Instead, I aim to be myself in completely different circumstances. I try to stay grounded and real in every moment. Before going on set, I like to stay focused, minimal talking, no distractions. I go over my lines, settle into my emotional space. If I need a little help, I turn to music. The right music can really guide my emotions and get me in the right mindset.”
